THE SERVANT'S VICTORY

In Isaiah 50; V6  We read," I gave my back to the smiters and my cheeks to them that plucked off. (Naw Ð Rat') the hair.  The word means, (to make bald.)  " I hid not my face from shame and spitting."

Gospel writers say, "That He was struck on the head with a reed, after a plaited crown of thorns was placed there."  Certainly He was bloodied, bruised, swollen, and disfigured.  Some commentators say that He was unrecognizable as a person or as a human.

I have listed these words that writers used to describe His ordeal.  Found in Isaiah 53, Matt.26, and Mark 15.

WOUNDED     Khaw-lal             To bore, wound, open

BRUISED        Daw-Kaw'           To crumble, beat to pieces

Stripes             Khab-boo-raw'    Bound (with stripes) a weal (or black and blue

mark itself) I think that He was marked around

                                                    as if bound with rope.

STRUCK         Toop'o                Thump, cudgel or pummel.  Repeated blows

                                                    with a stick.

Smote              Pah'-yo               A simple hit to sting.  As a scorpion.

Buffeted           Kol-af-id-Ôzo         Rap with a fist.

SCOURGED    Frag-el-lo'o         To whip, lash.

Please understand:

This is all pre-crucifixion suffering.  We can't understand this tormented sacrifice.  None of this is found in O.T. Law.  (The Sacrifical Lamb was treated with care and respect;  and when sacrificed was killed in the most painless manner.) We can only guess what all this means in human suffering.  We only know that this is only part of His grief.  He had given up Heaven to be our Redeemer and committed Himself to this scarred body forever.                                    nw
